Three updates all at once! Please read and enjoy them all.
Now available at your local News Stand is the latest edition of Gun Dog Magazine, featuring the article, "The Drent Who?" by noted outdoor author, and dog trainer Dave Carty. The article is well written, and fairly presents our favorite breed of dog, the Drent!
13 May 2010, the AKC has formally accepted the Drentsche Patrijshond into the FSS program.
Our dogs will soon be able to participate in all AKC Companion events! AKC Performance events should follow on or about 1 Jan 2011, we have requested to be able to participate in both Pointing & Retrieving hunt test & trials per keeping with the history of the breed. If granted we will be the second breed to have such an arrangement. In order to participate in events, your Drent will need to be enrolled in the AKC’s FSS program.
The American Kennel Club has made an offer no Drent owner should refuse! They have offered ALL U.S. Drent owners, for a limited time only, a NO FEE FSS registration! If you take advantage of this “batch turn-in” to the AKC – ALL registry fees are waived, which will save you 85 dollars! Here are the details…Your FSS application MUST include: A LEGIBLE photo copy of your Drents 3 generation pedigree Your dogs DPCNA pedigree is acceptable. Dutch, Belgian, Danish, Swedish & NAVHA pedigrees are all acceptable. Please DO NOT send original pedigrees. Two color photographs; three-by-five-inch, providing close-up front and side views of the dog in a standing position, are required. Proof the dog is either micro-chipped or tattooed. Properly completed, and signed in ink application. All FSS applications must be received by the DPCNA President Not Later Than: 1 Sept 2010.
It is important to note: Drents without a three generation pedigree may enroll in the FSS program, but are not allowed to participate in AKC events. So if you have a U.S. Bred and born Drent, it may still be very possible to have your dog registered with the DPCNA to get the pedigree your dog needs to participate.
Additionally, for members in good standing the DPCNA will put together and sending out a "users guide" to make all of this easier to use and understand as soon as ALL the details reveal themselves. Please keep checking back here for updates.

Our first newsletter has been published and distributed to all active DPCNA members, and a few friends of the club who have been particularly helpful. In this issue are exclusive pictures of the DPCNA’s first two litters, hunting stories, the minutes from our board meeting, and more. We’ll post the news letter on our web page for everyone in the fall, when issue #2 is due out.
I’d like to take a moment to thank Lifetime Member James Johnstone for being the clubs’ liaison with the Canadian Kennel Club. Thank you Jim! Many hands make for a lighter load. |

The DPCNA annual meeting was held September 26 - Oct 3 2009 in Idaho Falls, ID. It MIGHT have been a coincidence those dates coincided with four grouse seasons (blue, ruffed, sharptail and sage) and two partridge seasons (Chukar and Hungarian). But then again, probably so :-)
I believe it is safe to say everyone had an amazing and wonderful time, oh, and yes there was a meeting that took place.
Last but not least, Thank you Family Lambregts for being a most generous host!

January 2009: After nearly three years of communicating via the yahoo “Drent group”, e-mail, and the occasional phone call the Founders of the DPCNA, Brian O’Connor and John Lambregts meet to hunt Arizona’s famed Mearns quail, and to be interviewed by Gun Dog mag azine’s very own Dave Carty. John and Marsha made the 20 hour trek from Idaho while Brian and Nikki only had to come over from New Mexico to the beautiful and rugged landscape of South-Central Arizona. Four Drents made the historic trip John’s male Bowie and young female Clio, and Brian’s boys Paxson and Booker. Early Saturday morning we met Dave at the local coffee stop to make quick introductions, and set out to find a good place to find some birds. We managed to put down in a seldom used area and began to work our way up into the rugged gash of an arroyo. Surprisingly with four dogs on the floor it was Marsha who put up the first covey…making shots can be very tricky! Footing is poor, the sides of the washes are steep, and the birds are fast. To say the least making your limit on Mearns quail is no mean feat, and as a team we did well. Back at the hotel other hunters talked in disgust about not even seeing a single bird, and to see their poor tired, bedraggled, and limping dogs only served to reinforce Mearns hunting isn’t for the uninitiated, or unfit. It was on Sunday morning we bagged a mature rooster, and I think it is easy to say we were all astounded at the beauty of the bird. Seeing them in books, either photo or color plate and/or reading the words of a professional writer describing them as a bird built by committee simply does them no justice. As much as I’d like to say this was all about a big meeting, being interviewed for the breed and the club, it really wasn’t. It was all about the dogs, hunting some birds and making new friends – we’ll see you all there next year.

A New Club in Town!
The big news that everyone should be excited about is that the Drentsche Patrijshond Club of North America is officially a club! 2007 brought founding members together to get things rolling with the creation of bylaws and a code of ethics. 2008 saw these plans crystallize, and our formal incorporation was delivered in November. 2009 Starts with a newly formatted Board of Directors and this website. Press releases have been sent to numerous outdoor media outlets to announce our arrival. GunDog Magazine has already met with founders to discuss the Breed and our fledgling breed club. Please help us spread the news by telling your fellow hunting enthusiasts about the Drentsche Patrijshond Club of North America. |
